NFL End of Season Wrap-Up 2014

Its the end of the season and my playoff picks were not the best.

AFC
Ill take 3 division winners.

East: Patriots (12-4)
I love that after a couple early losses people were calling it an end of an era. Never count Brady and Belichick out.

North: Bengals (10-5-1) Steelers (11-5)
Boy was this division tight. All 4 teams were in it until week 15. 3 of the 4 made the playoffs. Those 3 teams were all within 1 game of each other.

South: Colts (11-5)
The Colts had 11 wins. The other 3 teams had 14 wins total.

West: Broncos (12-4)
The Broncos won 3 of their last 4. The Chiefs and Chargers together only won 3 games during that time.

Wild Card: Bills (9-7), Chiefs (9-7) Bengals (10-5-1), Ravens (10-6)
Well, I wasnt even close. There were a lot of 9-7 teams in the AFC.

NFC
At least I had 4 of the 6 teams correct. I just thought (and hoped) that the divisions would shake out a little different.

East: Eagles (10-6) Cowboys (12-4)
Well, the Cowboys beat the Eagles twice.

North: Lions (11-5) Packers (12-4)
I knew, early in the season, that this division was going to come down to week 17 in Lambeau.

South: Saints (7-9) Panthers (7-8-1)
Something has got to be done about this. A team with a losing record is going to the playoffs while the 10-6 Eagles will be watching from home.

West: Cardinals (11-5) Seahawks (12-4)
Winning your last 6 games, 5 of which are against divisional opponents, is a great way to sure up the division.

Wild Card: Cowboys (12-4), Packers (12-4) Cardinals (11-5), Lions (11-5)
Its really a shame that the Panthers have home field advantage over these teams.

Wild Card Round Picks
Ravens @ Steelers: Steelers
Cardinals @ Panthers: Cardinals
Bengals @ Colts: Bengals
Lions @ Cowboys: Cowboys

NFL Power Rankings: Week 14 2014

Goals

When I was a teenager, people would ask me what I want to be when I grow up. I got in the habit of answering: "I want to be happy". Now, if you were to ask me, I would say: "I want to be able to appreciate the times that are good, be able to cope with the times that arent, and be able to differentiate between the two."

Late Season Picks 2014

AFC
East: Patriots (9-2)
With a 3 game lead, it is very unlikely anyone will be taking the division from Tom Brady at this point in the season.

North: Bengals (7-3-1)
"Anyone can win this division right now. This might be the best division in the league." Thats what I wrote 4 weeks ago. It still stands.

South: Colts (7-4)
The Colts are the only ones who showed up again this season. 9-7 is probably all it will take to win the division.

West: Broncos (8-3)
The Chargers and Chiefs are hot on the Broncos heals. The Broncos have the easiest remaining schedule and should be able to hold on.

Wildcard: Bills (6-5), Chiefs (7-4)
There are a lot of teams at 7-4 right now. Those arent necessarily the best contenders either. Im going to stick with the Bills and Chiefs. Though, its hard to exclude both the Ravens and Steelers

NFC
East: Eagles (8-3)
"Thanksgiving could be the deciding game." Lets see how it goes!

North: Lions (7-4)
They may have to win out to take the division. They will almost certainly have to win in Lambeau.

South: Saints (4-7)
It depresses me that the 2-9 Bucs arent out of playoff contention yet. 7 wins could very well win this division. Perhaps 6.

West: Cardinals (9-2)
The Cardinals have a 2 game lead and the easiest schedule. The 49ers and Seahawks play one another twice still.

Wildcard: 49ers (7-4), Cowboys (8-3), Packers (8-3)
Its hard to exclude the 49ers and Seahawks but I think they are going to split their 2 remaining games and knock each other out of the playoffs.

As for the Superbowl, I think Ill stick with the Patriots over the Cardinals.

Mid Season Picks: 2014

AFC
East: Patriots (7-2)
The Patriots have had some big wins lately.
North: Bengals (5-2-1)
Anyone can win this division right now. This might be the best division in the league.
South: Texans (4-5) Colts (5-3)
Well, the Colts are starting to make something happen. Well see how tomorrow night goes against the Giants
West: Broncos (6-2)
The Broncos continue to be one of the best teams in the league.
Wildcard: Chargers (5-4), Bills (5-3), Chiefs (5-3)
Looks like the Bills are hanging in there. The Chargers have lost their last 3. The Chiefs have won their last 3.

NFC
East: Eagles (6-2)
The Cowboys are hot on their trail but the Eagles have the better schedule and should be able to hold on. Thanksgiving could be the deciding game.
North: Lions (6-2)
If the Lions win their last 4 home games they should make the playoffs. They may have to win in Lambeau to take the division.
South: Panthers (3-5-1) Saints (4-4)
This division... The Saints are the only team to win in the last 4 weeks.
West: Cardinals (7-1)
While the Rams arent doing well they are having fun playing spoiler. Arizona continues to get wins.
Wildcard: Seahawks (5-3), 49ers (4-4), Cowboys (6-3)
I feel like the Seahawks might be the best team that doesnt make the playoffs. They have the hardest schedule in the league right now.

As for the Superbowl, I think Ill go with the Patriots over the Cardinals.

Power Rankings: Week 8 2014

The Broncos continue to dominate. The Cardinals prove they are the best birds in the league. The Cowboys barely hang on after a devastating loss to the Redskins. The Lions and Falcons show London how not to play football. The Patriots humiliate the Bears.

Power Rankings: Week 7 2014

Broncos win a big game against the 49ers and take the top spot. There was nothing the Cardinals could do, beating the winless Raiders doesnt give you many points. Seahawks fell prey to one of my favorite coaches, Jeff Fisher and his under performing Rams.

Power Rankings: Week 6 2014

The Colts got a big win over the Texans to take first in their division and bump up seven slots this week. How about those Giants! Down by 3 scores early in the 3rd quarter and already calling it do or die. As Chris Collinsworth said: "If the Giants are going to win they need to keep the ball out of Eli Mannings hands." Power Rankings: Week 5 2014

Despite a loss to the Broncos, the Cardinals hang on to the number 1 spot. This leaves us without an undefeated team, which seems kind of early this year. Luckily we still have 2 teams that refuse to win. Im looking at you Oakland and Jacksonville. The Cowboys have now moved up 10 spots in 2 weeks while the Lions kicking team continues to be not Jason Hanson costing them 6 spots.

2014 Power Rankings: Week 4

The beginning of the season is always volatile on my chart. Lots of teams moving 5 or more spots. It seems like the only teams that are stable are the ones that didnt play this week and the ones who continue to refuse to win. The biggest headlines this week are clearly that the Steelers lose to the Bucs and the Chiefs destroy the Patriots.

Biggest Changes

2014 Power Rankings: Week 3

As you all know (by all I of course mean the exactly 0 people who read this) I have a very special formula that I use to help me determine who is having the best season in the NFL. A team gets a point for every win, loses a point for every loss. Additionally, they get a point for every win that a team they defeat has and lose a point for every loss that a team they lose to has. For example, the Lions now have 2 wins and 1 loss. They defeated the Giants who have 1 win, lost to the Panthers who have 1 loss, and defeated the Packers who have 1 win. 2-1+1-1+1=2.

Based on this I have devised my own power rankings. ESPN and the NFL and Im sure many other groups have their own systems for this. Here is how mine look.

  1. Bengals (3-0)
  2. Cardinals (3-0)
  3. Eagles (3-0)
  4. Chargers (2-1)
  5. Ravens (2-1)
  6. Seahawks (2-1)
  7. Steelers (2-1)
  8. Bills (2-1)
  9. Panthers (2-1)
  10. Broncos (2-1)
  11. Lions (2-1)
  12. Bears (2-1)
  13. Falcons (2-1)
  14. Cowboys (2-1)
  15. Patriots (2-1)
  16. 49ers (1-2)
  17. Texans (2-1)
  18. Giants (1-2)
  19. Titans (1-2)
  20. Redskins (1-2)
  21. Colts (1-2)
  22. Packers (1-2)
  23. Dolphins (1-2)
  24. Browns (1-2)
  25. Saints (1-2)

NFL Early Season Picks 2014

Here they are.
AFC
East: Patriots (2-1)
Boring!
North: Bengals (3-0)
Three good wins to start the season. Lets see where this goes.
South: Texans (2-1)
This division, I tell ya. It will surprise me if any of them do better than 10-6
West: Broncos (2-1)
I cant pick against Peyton, not this early in the season.
Wildcard: Chargers (2-1), Bills (2-1)
While I know that the Bills will disappoint me they have put up 2 very good wins.

NFC
East: Eagles (3-0)NFL
It may be bloody getting there but the Eagles are on a roll.
North: Lions (2-1)
Its probably just wishful thinking but when the home team is on top you have to pick them right?
South: Panthers (2-0)
They beat the Lions and Bucks handedly.
West: Cardinals (3-0)
Its really hard to pick a team other than the Seahawks or 49ers. But, I think all 4 of these teams could make the playoffs this year.
Wildcard: Seahawks (2-1), 49ers (1-2)

End of the Season

I just dont even know what to say about what happened last night. So I wont. But, with the 2013 season concluded, the Lions are now tied for 1st in the NFC north!

Super Bowl XLVIII

The playoffs have come to an end and for the first time ever I have successfully picked the teams that came through to battle in the Super Bowl. Way back in October I picked the Broncos and Seahawks to represent their conferences in the biggest game of the year. I also made a prediction that it would be the Broncos standing victorious at games end.

Conference Round 2013

I went 4/4 this week. I dont think there was much surprise though. Which means we have New England going to Denver and San Francisco going to Seattle. This is the first time in a while that I feel that the best 4 teams are fighting for their conference championships. After week 6 I picked the Broncos and the Seahawks to win their AFC and NFC. Im going to stick with my original picks.

Divisional Round 2013

This Week
As predicted the Colts took out the Chiefs, if only by a total collapse of the Chiefs defence.
The Saints thwarted the naysayers by going on the road to Phili and taking out the Eagles.
I got the Chargers/Bengals game wrong but Im not surprised that the Bengals couldnt get it done.
The cold didnt seem to hamper the 49ers in their win in Lambeau.
Accuracy: 3/4

Next Week
New Orleans @ Seattle: Ive been very impressed with this Seattle team and I cant imagine the Saints coming in and winning another road game in the Seahawks stadium. Se
ahawks
Indianapolis @ New England: This game is what the AFC playoffs have been all about for the last decade. Unfortunately for Indy, Peyton is a Bronco this year. Patriots
San Francisco @ Carolina: Last week I said that there was only one NFC team that can beat the 49ers. The Panthers are not that team. 49ers
San Diego @ Denver: A classic AFC West showdown. The Chargers have a lot of momentum but I think the Broncos are ready for the Super Bowl this year. Broncos

Playoffs 13

So, it looks like I did pretty good on my picks.
AFC
East: Patriots! (12-4)
North: Bengals! (11-5) Looks like my last minute change worked out.
South: Colts! (11-5) The other 3 teams have a combined 13 wins. "Good job winning the South Indy" he said sarcastically.
West: Broncos! (13-3)
Wildcard: Chiefs! (11-5), Dolphins Chargers (9-7) So the Dolphins didnt make it. Who would have thought that the 5-7 Chargers would win their last 4 and to be the only other team over 500 in the AFC.
NFC
East: Cowboys Eagles (10-6) Fuckin Cowboys
North: Lions Packers (8-7-1) Technically over 500, Green Bay limps into the playoffs from a division that hates to win this season.
South: Saints Panthers (12-4) I said the Saints would have to beat the Panthers twice, they didnt.
West: Seahawks! (13-3)
Wildcard: 49ers! (12-4), Panthers Saints (11-5) So the Panthers beat out the Saints for the division and I had them the other way around.

What happens next?
Chiefs vs Colts: Ive been unimpressed with the Colts all season. That said, Andy Reed cant win in the playoffs. Colts
Saints vs Eagles: Saints
Chargers vs Bengals: While I think the Chargers have made a great run, I have to go with the Bengals.
49ers vs Packers: There is only one NFC team that can stop the 49ers and it isnt the Packers. 49ers.

As for the Superbowl; Im still going with the Broncos over the Seahawks. Though, for the first time this season I think the 49ers or Panthers could contest for the NFC Championship.
